Hayward - Tactics

General Tactics

Hayward is an archer and a very good archer at that. Although the weapons he starts off with only have a range of 2 the later weapons in the game have a range of 2~3, giving him a vastly improved range. Naturally, as he is a long distance fighter, keep Hayward at distance from the enemy and snipe them with his bows. Hayward has a pretty low defence so try to develop a friendship with Obright to help him out in this respect.

Magic and Magic Resistance

Hayward has no magic and poor magic resistance values so cast a resist spell on him when nearing powerful magic-users.

Weapons and Equipment

For Weapons I recommend sticking with the Arrow for most of Hayward's attacking as they are the strongest weapons he can equip, but train him up with the X-Bow too because the two best mithril X-Bows (Flame X-Bow and Sonic X-Bow) increase some of his magic resistance so you can equip a X-Bow when close to magicians.

Hayward's two weakest points are his defence and agility so equip him with the Gale Ring that you can find in the switching point battle (battle #8) as it boosts both defence and agility. However, this can be swapped at the end of the game for an Apollo Pin if you want.
