Chapter 1 - Nightmare in the Floating City of Saraband
|
Saraband
After the opening sequence inside the Republic camp headquarters, Synbios will be free to explore the city of Saraband. Be sure to look carefully as there are many hidden items. Dantares joins Synbios' party as they journey out into Saraband, before they leave the headquarters though, Masqurin and Grace also join the force. Masqurin gives Synbios the cut flower.

While exploring Saraband you'll meet two characters, Hayward and Garosh, who will be important to the storyline later on so don't fret trying to get them to join you at this stage. Go through the gates at the north end of the Republic district to the central district. On top of the tavern you can talk to Arthur, the magic knight. He asks you a question, answer yes to it and he will join Medion's force in scenario 2 if Medion talks to him as well. Now use the opposite gates in the central district to enter the Imperial district leading to an encounter with some Imperial troops. As the scene gets ugly, Prince Medion, Campbell, and Grantack show up to save the day. Once this sequence has finished, go back the way you came to come to the first battle...

Hide your force behind the broad side of the church to lure two of the monks out, then pounce on them in your next turn. The rest of the monks should be no problem but keep HP levels high so they don't surprise you.
End of Battle
Once the battle has been won head back to the Republic camp and you will encounter Benetram kidnapping Domaric with a group of masked monks. Once the scene is finished enter the Republic building again.
With the Empire forces certain to retaliate after the news of Domaric's kidnapping, Benetram and the rest of the Republic's forces must escape Saraband. Once Benetram joins with Synbios' battalion head back to the central district and across the bridge opposite the fountain. Another battle awaits you...

Don't worry about the Impostor, Domaric and the two Mask Monks at the end of the bridge, they leave the battle after the 1st turn so you won't have to fight them. If you talk to Hayward then he will join Synbios' force.
If you talk to Garosh he will scurry off to inform Governor General Garvin of Benetram's innocence and will join Medion's force in scenario 2. If Garosh dies in this battle however, then Jade (Garosh's brother) will join Medion's force in scenario 2, so the choice is yours of who you want in your scenario 2 team.
| | | Garosh | or | Jade |
Rush Synbios and Dantares to where Hayward and Garosh are positioned. If you use their maximum movement allowances then you can manoeuvre Dantares to talk to Garosh (if you want to save him) and Synbios to talk to Hayward before the Mask Monks 'sic it to 'em. If they die before you talk to them then they will be dead forever (you'll have to cast return if you want another shot). Take out the bats that ambush you and the 4 mask monks. Before attacking the boss, cross the western bridge and destroy the barrel so you can pick up the iron bracer after the battle. Attack the boss with all of your force, you should be able to take him out in one turn if all your troops get a hit in on him (with Masqurin using a blaze spell instead of a regular attack).

After you leave Saraband, Synbios' force will encounter the Impostor and the monks with an unconcious Domaric. Benetram and Synbios' force discuss what to do during the unfolding circumstance. The Bulzome posse heads towards Balsamo and summons and army of masked monks and bats to stop Synbios from following them.

Again, don't worry about the Imposter and the 2 mask monks, they will leave the battle by the end of the 3rd turn. Stick to the road and lure the monks out so that you will be able to take them out individually or in groups of two. After you reach a certain point on the map, the Saraband Knights will come out of Saraband and attack Synbios' force. Try to keep them scattered so that you can take them on individually. Kill the knights first, then their leader but be careful because both the knights and their commander are strong against Synbios as he is equipped with a sword. Once the Saraband troupe has been dealt with, return to the mask monk boss and the bats, killing them should be no great task.
End of Battle
General Varlant shows up and commends Synbios' army for their efforts. Two Imperial ships appear from the south and dock outside Saraband and general Spiriel emerges from Saraband spotting Varlant whom she is pleased to challenge. Crewart, Arrawnt and Mageron follow from Saraband and discuss the problem of Domaric's kidnapping and Varlant's army. Crewart dispatches his troops to the east, towards Balsamo while Varlant creates a diversion for Benetram so that he can retreat into the quaint, country hamlet.

Your objective is the Inn in the north-east, once you get there go up the stairs and tell the monk that you are Synbios. He will instruct you to go to the middle room and meet with the high priests. The high priests cordially introduce themselves: Fiale, Dessheren, Basanda and Goriate. During the conversation the priests deny their involvement in the disruptions of the peace negotiations but the bound monk in the room is revealed to be Domaric. Before Synbios, Dantares and Benetram can act, they are forced out of the room by Goriate's magic. Out-numbered and surrounded, Benetram encourages Synbios to retreat.
When you return to the Inn, all the monks have vanished. Head back to the room where the high priests were and they will talk to you from a distance. Fiale reveals that he was the impostor and that it was part of their plot to ruin the peace conference between the Republic and the Empire.
Preparations now have to be made to evacuate the now occupied town of Balsamo. Before leaving the inn, head down the hallway of the 1st floor and you will find that you can walk through the wall at the end. Follow the hidden path and untie Bernard. He isn't very grateful to be rescued by Republic troops who he thinks captured him in the first place. He vows to destroy the Republic army and heads for dusty village where Medion will be able to recruit him in scenario 2.
| Bernard |
Now head to Toby's house and climb the stairs to the roof where you will meet Obright. He was separated from General Produn's army and wants to help Benetram as he is not a deserter and is still loyal to the Republic. Obright dutifully joins the force.

To leave Balsamo, go to Duncan's home, which is the house next to the abandoned Republic HQ in the north-west of the town. Obright tells Duncan and Toby that he needs to take Benetram and Synbios' force with him through Duncan's secret underground path. Duncan permits this and is happy that the pathway he built for fun is being used to save lives. Use the back door in Duncan's home to go to the garden and examine the well. Jump into the well and head for Dwarf Valley.
Battle #4 - Dwarf Valley
Enemies | HP | MP | ATK | DEF | AGL | LCK | SPD | EQUIPPED | MAGIC | SPECIALS | ITEM | GOLD |

Items
Antidote Herb: | In the left barrel of the pair of barrels closest to the starting point |
Steel Bracer: | In the treasure chest at the top-left of the valley |
Medical Herb: | In the right barrel of the pair of barrels furthest from the starting point |
To win this battle you don't have to kill every enemy but you must get to the opposite side of the map. There are two respawning points next to the rocks at the top end of either side of the valley, if you kill the Scaven or Worms that start near these points then a replacement will respawn there. To get to the opposite side of the map you must pass through the narrow valley guarded by the two snipers. Either use ranged attacks to kill the snipers or take advantage of the territory at the bottom of the valley to pass through without the snipers being able to attack you. It's worth sending two or three of your force past the worm on the western side of the valley to get to the treasure chest containing the steel bracer, but remember that the worm will respawn from the rock it started at if it dies. To progress to the next battle, move Synbios to the far edge of the map and select 'map move'.

Battle #5 - Dwarf Hill

Move your force forward to lure the sniper and worm out from the forest and kill them with your larger force. Deal with the Dark Mage and Scaven to the west in a similar fashion also. To go to the ruins, inspect the doorway using any character, so long as you have the Hill Ruins map in your possession. It's advisable to inspect the ruins using the character with the highest agility so you can send as many of your force in as you want that turn. Remember that Synbios cannot leave the field map for the ruins so leave some of the force behind to protect him.
Thief Map #1
Try to keep the enemy scattered in little groups so you can easily over-power them.
End of Battle
The dying thief almost reveals the involvement Shiraf, the head of the Dusty bandits, has in the conference debacle but his wounds catch up to him and he dies before the crucial information is revealed. Unfortunate as it is that this valuable information is lost, Synbios' battalion presses onto Railhead.
Chapter Summary
The fiscal problems of the Republic triggered turmoil in Barrand, just the excuse the Empire needed to justify an invasion of the Holy Land, bringing both countries to the brink of full-scale war. A peace conference was called in an attempt to avert the coming war, but the abduction of the Emperor by Bulzome fanatics raised tensions of both sides. Both sides left the peace conference planning for war. Synbios managed to escape Balsamo, and is heading to the town of Railhead where General Produn awaits. However, many unexpected events lie in his and his party's path.
